Flying away in Science

Now in science we are learning about Planes. We had to make a FOSS plane and name it. My groups name was Fire bolt. We drew a picture of fire on the side of the plane. The whole experiment was to see how many winds of the propeller it took to fly 4 meters. Follow any simple plane making kit. We used FOSS directions to make our plane.

Experiment:

  1. Take 2 chairs that are the same height and spread them 4 meters apart.
  2. Take fishing line and tape it to the 2 chairs.  Hang the plane from the string.
  3. Start from one end of the string (one of the chairs) and start winding the propeller to a number which you think it will work . (Make sure you count the number of winds.)
  4. Then let go and Voila your plane is flying! If it doesn’t reach the end of the string try again but with more winds. If it reaches the end and it keeps spinning (the propeller) you need less winds.

The second part of the experiment we had to predict how many winds it would take for it to go halfway. I predicted 25 winds. It was right! This experiment was really fun. I hope you get a chance to do it!Go to Miss Bulsza’s blog to see a movie of one of the groups!
